Artist Bio

Biography: Carla is an adjunct faculty member in the Industrial Design program at The Cleveland Institute of Art. She  graduated with a degree in Industrial Design from Central St Martins School of Art and Design, University of the Arts London, (England). Carla then received her MBA in Marketing from Cleveland State University.

She is the founder and principal partner of Design Interface Inc. an award winning design consultancy specializing in industrial, graphic, package and web design. Carla has also taught at The Cleveland Institute of Art for over 30 years. She teaches Ergonomics + Design and Marketing + Design. In 1998 Carla received the Lily Grant to study women in design and in 2005 she authored a chapter on Ergonomics for the book Process Materials and Measurements, published in collaboration with the ID Department and fellow faculty member Dan Cuffaro.

Design and the business of creating for various clients has been Carla Blackman’s mainstay for the past 30 years. Design influences include her early employers Viktor Schreckengost, Hugh Greenlee & Roy Hess. More recently she has been influenced by painting teachers Robert Moyer and Jeff Suntala. Of course, Blackman is always influenced by her many past and current students at the Cleveland Institute of Art.

About ten years ago Blackman followed the call to expressing herself through fine art. Her process follows a path of inspiration, usually through photographs from her travels. Then on to sketching, from there to painting in both water color and oils.

Blackman loves working with intense colors and watching the paint flow in an uncontrolled manner, loose and expressive is her favorite way to work. The addition of calligraphic lines is also satisfying.
